Social media has opened up the doors to so many new ways to engage online. It helped out during Covid when people had no other way to keep up with their friends. This article will cover different Facebook communities and the pros and cons of open and closed social networks.

Facebook groups are a great way to meet new people with common interests. There are several groups out there for anything like rollerskating, sewing, cooking, makeup, mental health, and the list goes on. There are groups for everything; there are several benefits to joining a group. Like you get a good amount of people who will support you and you can get and give advice; it’s a great way to network with others.

It might surprise you but here are a few of the largest Facebook Groups:

  1. Maths Formulas has over 3 million members and is an open group, and all they do is post math equations, and people will solve them and post their answers in the comment section.
  2. WWE MONDAY NIGHT RAW has 3 million members and is a private group; this group talks about wrestlers and shares their favorite pictures.
  3. Instant Pot® Community has over 3 million members and is an open group people share recipes, story times, pictures, and fails.
  4. Deepika Sharma has over 7 million members, and this is a private group that shares funny videos, memes, and sarcasm.

As I said, there is a Facebook Group for everything; you just have to find it.

There are definitely pros and cons to open and closed social networks and groups. Let’s start off by defining what open and closed social networks are. “Open social networks allow internet users to view content through search engines and interact with anyone who uses the platform.” Closed social networks “set limits on who can see your content and you won’t find content on those networks unless you specifically search for them.”

A couple of pros that open social networks have are you get different viewpoints from those who don’t necessarily have the same opinions. Everyone can add to the conversation. Another one would be if you are trying to be an influencer or go viral, you have a better chance of your content being reached and shared worldwide.

A couple of pros for closed social networks are they can be used as a safe place for people to talk about really difficult things, and you can meet authentic people who care. Closed social networks allow a chance for people to be genuine and not fake.

A con for both open and closed social networks is misinformation can be posted. When covid happened, there was a lot of misinformation being spread about the virus, and people believed it. It got to the point that you really didn’t know what was true or false.

A con for closed social media is that you can end up with one-sided views and opinions. If you’re in a group where everyone hates tacos, then you would never hear any other opinion. A con for open social media is that you don’t really get a chance to grow deeper relationships with people. It all stays on a basic level.

There are pros and cons to anything. You have to decide what is most important to you. There are a lot of fun groups and communities available you have to search for them. There’s a place for everyone to connect online.
