Sewing is always something I’ve been interested in. It all started back in middle school when I took my first Home Ec class, and then from there, I took a fashion design class in high school. From that, I have made my homecoming dress, prom dress, and different fun projects. I’ve even started an Instagram page dedicated to my projects. For me, sewing is a way I can get creative and make something new.

I wanted to learn more about sewing and wondered if there was a Facebook Group out there for it. I stumbled across a group called “Sewing For Beginners.” It has over 100K followers. Even though I have yet to contribute to the group, I’ve been observing and noticing a few things.

  1. People will post the projects they are proud of. The comment section would be flooded with people praising this person for a job well done. This just lets me know that this group is very supportive.
  2. People ask for advice. If people get stuck on the project and don’t know how to fix something or what to do next, they will post a picture of it in the group and just ask. A ton of people will swarm in to help that person out. There is no judgment in seeking help.
  3. People ask for inspiration. someone will post a picture of the fabric they have and ask, “what should I make with this fabric?” People will chime in with all types of creative ideas.
  4. People share tips. Group members will post and share different videos or blogs that helped them learn something new. Or they will ask questions like, “what’s the best tip you learned from sewing?” people will be honest and give their best advice.

Even though this is a great group, it does face challenges like any group. The biggest one is people who self-advertise in the group. For example, people will share their Facebook Page in the group and ask people to follow it, or people will post a pattern that they are selling. This isn’t a terrible thing, but this Facebook group is not the place to advertise those things. This group is more focused on providing resources and helping people than trying to make money off of someone. This doesn’t happen often, but when it does happen, no one does anything about it. The admins and moderators can do a better job at this. When things like this does happen, no one engages with the post. The admins or moderators should take the post down.

I think this group is special because of how group members can easily feel connected and supported through sewing. This a place where people feel comfortable, can share their projects, and just ask for help. It truly is an amazing community, but there are several sewing groups out there that focus on different things.

I tried reaching out to the group Admin (Sewing For Beginners) to ask her how she feels about the group but, I have not gotten a response back.
